I just went back through over 900 liked posts and dug out all the art tutorials so i can keep track of them. I guess this might be helpful to some of you guys, so here you go.

Some of these were gutted from posts where the original was deleted and so can’t be linked to in the masterpost list - especially one by Tumblr user melkh who has since either deleted or changed their url, so props to them.

Here we go then!

Freeware

Alchemy - this is a really fun program. You play around making abstract shapes until you start to see something in them, kind of like a Rorschach test. Then you use the shapes as a base to draw it from.
MyPaint - a pretty decent painting program that also has the benefit of working on Unix systems.
openCanvas 1.1 - I haven’t used openCanvas in years but it was a nice program with a pretty unique feel to it.
ArtRage - Only used this a couple of times donkey’s years ago just before I got oC, but I’ve heard good things about it.
The GIMP - In a similar vein to Photoshop, but free. I couldn’t get on with it when I tried it out a few years ago, but it’s pretty popular and is available on Unix systems and Macs.

Not-free-ware

Photoshop - Standard painting fare. Probably the most flexible program (particularly the latest versions) but not designed to act in a “natural” way. If you’ve used it for painting versus something like Painter you know what I mean. Who the fuck pays for it though? Google “Photoshop tumblr masterpost” and take your pick.
Paint Tool Sai - Far more affordable and definitely worth paying for if you can. The brushes are very decent (especially when they’ve been tweaked a little), the gui is simple and intuitive, and I dare you to find a program with which making smooth lineart is easier.
Corel Painter - My program of choice for most things. More tools than you could ever possibly use and pretty cheap on a student license, providing that you can prove you’re a student! It’s got a few bugs but if you want realism or a more natural feel than PS or SAI this is the program for you.

Something has happened recently in the ‘Supernatural’ fandom, a change. The fandom, it seems, has begun a movement towards something new. Of course it’s too soon to tell whether interest will last until the fandom reaches that something new OR what exactly that something new actually IS but it is definitely interesting.

We began the year with a lot of us pretty disillusioned with SPN and wary of what might be going on behind the scenes. At the same time, nobody knew for sure what was going on and, whatever the case, there didn’t seem to be anything anyone could DO about it.

Then came the seemingly-collective idea of the No Homo Intern. The basic synopsis is that Jeremy Carver was pushing so hard for Destiel to go explicitly canon that an intern was hired by the ‘Supernatural’ powers-that-be to make sure things between Dean and Cas didn’t get too romantic after season 8. The kicker, of course, is that the NHI is actually Jeremy Carver wearing a mustache and a hat as a disguise and he has been subversively working very hard undercover to make sure Dean/Cas eventually DOES go explicitly canon.

In the midst of that, there came the idea that a bored NSA agent (dubbed Gilbert) found himself shipping Destiel while spying on tumblr and realized where Jeremy Carver was trying to take the story and develops a badly-concealed crush on him. Gilbert also discovers about the existance of the No Homo Intern and resolves to get rid of him, not realizing that the NHI and Jeremy Carver are the same person.

From what could have been a cracky concept, there suddenly sprang a plot.

The idea spread like wildfire throughout the fandom and provided an amusing RPF-esque theory as to what was going on behind the scenes and, in some small way, gave us almost a metaphorical control of it. It grew into something bigger and gathered a following that I might dare call a fandom of its own.

And from that, there arose the Fandom fandom. A group of bloggers who put THEMSELVES into a canon AS themselves in a way that struck a chord with a lot of us disillusioned SPN fans and Destiel shippers.

Separately, but on the heels of the recent rise of the NHI and Fandom fandom, we had the release of the first episode of ‘Kevin’s Continued Winchester Gospel.’

Now let’s talk about that for a minute.

If you haven’t seen the episode, it’s a fan-made video exploring the idea that Kevin Tran, like the previous prophet Chuck Shurley, began having visions. The first episode shows Kevin providing very, very drunk commentary on what is easily recognizable as the end of SPN 9.23.

Here’s the thing though, the star is none other than our very own Osric Chau. Yes, you read that right. Kevin’s commentary is arguably pretty cracky but that’s not the point. The point is that a fan favorite actor from ‘Supernatural’ is in a fan-made video playing the very same character he played on the show. And it’s REALLY well done.

The disclaimer at the beginning of ‘Kevin’s Continued Winchester Gospel’ says the story takes place in an alternate universe but I think that’s arguable in and of itself. It could easily have happened (unbeknownst to the Winchesters) within the parameters of canon during the first half of season 9.

The fact is, alternate universe or not, the precident of fans taking control of the canon has now been set. This happened. And now that the precident HAS been set, where are we headed next? There’s a whole wide world of possibilities out there if we only pursue them.

This begs the question, where does official canon end and fanfiction begin? It’s not a new debate by any means, there have been arguments as to whether the ‘Star Trek’ TOS novels (and the animated series) are technically canon. And what about the ‘Star Wars’ extended universe novels that I may or may not have been totally obsessed with at one point when I was a teenager? Are they truly canon? In light of the new movies? No, it’s not a new debate in fandom in general but I think it’s something new for the ‘SUPERNATURAL’ FANDOM. The Kevin video legally can’t be considered canon but is canon truly all boiled down to legality?

Let’s face it, the fans have taken things to the next level this year. Do I dare call this a fandom renaissance? Maybe not yet. We’re an easily-distracted bunch but, I believe that if we really want to keep taking things to the next level, a fandom renaissance it very well could be.
